George Walters

George Walters VC (September 15, 1829 - June 3, 1872) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

Details

He was 23 years old, and a sergeant in the 49th Regiment (later The Royal Berkshire Regiment - Princess Charlotte of Wales's), British Army during the Crimean War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.

On 5 November 1854 at the Battle of Inkerman, Crimea, Sergeant Walters rescued a brigadier general who was surrounded by the enemy, one of whom the sergeant bayoneted.

The medal

His Victoria Cross is displayed at The Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment (Salisbury) Museum "(Salisbury, Wiltshire, England)".
