Esprit D'Corps
S.H. Rider High School, colloquially known simply as "Rider" has developed a highly animated student body an sense of campus unity thanks in part to the long-standing and much emphasized
Wichita Falls High School , or "Old High" as the students call it. This rivalry reaches back decades to the founding of S.H. Rider to such a degree that the original candidate for the school's mascot was a roadrunner (the joke being that Wichita Falls High School's mascot was and is a coyote) this precedent of competition has spawned a long-standing series of pranks and general mayhem enacted upon one campus by students from the other.Rider possesses several somewhat interesting traditions, including the following:
Mum Day- On the day of the
homecoming game against their rival Wichita Falls High School; in addition to wearing the traditional mum the entire school is sworn to a taciturn 'Oath of Silence' for the entire day: faculty included. The ceremony concludes during a pep rally at the end of the day when a fire siren that was rung during the first game against Old High is rung and every student and staff member screams at the top of their lungs. This tradition is particularly interesting due to the fact that in recent years it has earned the attention of national media and during the2006 Homecoming Game media fromESPN was in attendance to the event.ROHO- Rider's 'battlecry,' so to speak, pioneered as a phrase with a double meaning that has never been officially acknowledged by the administration of the school. The phrase officially stands for 'Ride On Honorable Ones' however by much of the faculty and students its true meaning is no secret: 'Run Old High Over.' 'Old High' being the nickname of the schools longstanding cross-town rival.
