- East Acton tube station
East Acton is a
London Underground station in Acton in westLondon . It is close to theHM Prison Wormwood Scrubs jail andQueen Charlotte's and Chelsea Hospital . It first opened in 1920 on the Ealing Broadway extension of theCentral London Railway (CLR), which became the Central line in 1933. The line was built with the help of the GWR and was also known as theEaling & Shepherd's Bush Railway , complete with connections to theWest London Line nearShepherd's Bush , the former GWR mainline toBirmingham atNorth Acton and the mainline toBristol at Ealing Broadway. Since the CLR was exclusively a passsnger service, two extra dedicated tracks for the GWR's freight trains were opened in 1938, but were closed in 1964cite book |last=Jackson|first=Alan A|title=London's Local Railways|year=1999|publisher=Capital Transport|chapter=|pages=|isbn=1-85414-209-7] . The trackbed of these rails is now overgrown with vegetation visible immediately to the north of the station.The station has recently been refurbished with the staircases improved and the "East Acton underground roundels" replaced with larger, newer versions.
The station is on the
Central Line , between White City and North Acton stations, and inTravelcard Zone 2 .References
