List of Record of Lodoss War locations

The following is a list of locations that are found in the Record of Lodoss War media franchise.

Lodoss

The first two series of "Record of Lodoss War" take place on the continent (called an Island during the series) Lodoss, which is located to the south of the continent of Alecrast. It is said that during the War of the Gods, the island of Lodoss was separated by a final strike by both Marfa and Kardis. Both goddesses are said to have went into a death-like sleep after this event occurred, and it is only hinted at as to where their bodies could be.

Countries

Alania

Alania is the home nation of Parn and Etoh, and where Slayn himself has settled down. While Valis is known for the skill of its knights, Alania is known for the ruthlessness of its knights, of whose members Woodchuck says, "Couldn't really give a rat's ass about the army, they just want an excuse to kill something." Alania is one of the first nations to fall during the war of heroes, but prior to this is it was ruled by King Kadomos VII.

Kannon

Kannon, also known as "the Shining Hill", is a nation along the coast of Lodoss, and was one of the first targets of the Marmo forces. Ruled by King Kannon, it does not have much in the way of a standing army, and fell with almost no resistance. However, King Kannon refused to sign formal surrender with Beld, so Beld had the royal family of Kannon executed, and in the aftermath Kannon was occupied by the Marmo forces.

Marmo

Marmo is an island just off the southern coast of Lodoss. It is here that the villains of the series reside, namely Beld, Ashram, and Wagnard, who plot to conquer Lodoss to unite it under one flag. In the depths of Marmo is the resting place of Narse, an ancient black dragon, and even further into the depths still is the final resting place of Kardis and her avatar Naneel.

Moss

Moss is a neutral nation of Lodoss, home of Prince Jester and the wyvern riders. Moss' role in the War of Heroes is never truly touched upon. It is only hinted that they are there to prevent the invasion of Lodoss by Marmo, but this is only mentioned briefly in a conversation between Jester and Kashue when Jester encounters the latter on a journey to Valis. In the second series, it is hinted at that Shiris may have married Jester.

Cities

Kastuul

Kastuul is the former capital of Lodoss island itself, though the once great magic city has long since fallen into ruin. Five hundred years prior to the events that take place during the War of Heroes, Kastuul was a kingdom which was the home of (among others) the greatest priests, sorcerers and wizards on Lodoss. [Record of Lodoss War, episode 7] Among these was Karla the Grey Witch, who foresaw the final days of Kastuul, leading her to preserve her life force in a circlet.

Located in the very center of Lodoss island, Kastuul was once the most powerful nation on Lodoss, and in its prime was not only the source of magic items and artifacts, but it was also the home to some of the ancient dragons of Lodoss, survivors of the cataclysmic war that took place on Lodoss long ago, when the gods Kardis and Marfa did battle, an event that severed the land linking Alecrast and Lodoss, separating them by a great distance.

Among the dragon allies of Kastuul were Bramd the Silver, Mycen the Gold, Abram the Blue, Shooting Star the Red, and Narse the Black. When the barbarian tribes, distrustful humans who did not understand the destructive force of magic, came upon the city of Kastuul there was for but a short time a peace between Kastuul and the tribes. However, this peace did not last and the barbarians attacked Kastuul. While the power of Kastuul was great, the number of the barbarians was far greater, and Kastuul fell. Just prior to the final attack on Kastuul, the governor tasked the ancient dragons with the task of guarding the legacy of Kastuul, and gave them each a magic artifact before sending them to the corners of Lodoss. It is easily possible that there were originally more than the five ancient dragons, and more than five ancient treasures sent to be guarded, and that over the course of 500 years some of those dragons were slain.

Though Kastuul itself was defeated by the barbarian tribes, the great city itself still exists. While much of it has sunk into the swamp that the city once resided upon, the magic city's center, a once great citadel stands. This citadel is the home of Karla the Grey Witch, who commonly resides here when not manipulating the people of Lodoss to her beck and call to maintain a neutrality amongst Lodoss.

Valis

Valis is known as the holy city of Lodoss, and the home of King Fahn and the Holy Knights of Valis. The patron deity of Valis is Falis, the supreme god, and a possible origin of the name "Valis". All across Lodoss, Valis is known to have the most feared knights in the land, as their requirements are very demanding, requiring a warrior to be pure of heart, courageous of spirit, and skillful in combat.
