- USS Egeria (ARL-8)
USS "Egeria" (ARL-8) was one of 39 "Achelous"-class
landing craft repair ships built for theUnited States Navy duringWorld War II . Named for Egeria (a fountainnymph inRoman mythology , and the wife ofNuma Pompilius ), she was the only U.S. Naval vessel to bear the name.Originally laid down as "LST-136"; launched by the Chicago Bridge and Iron Works of
Seneca, Illinois 23 November 1943 ; sponsored by Mrs. Delphine Z. Draut; and placed in reduced commission on18 December 1943 . She proceeded toBaltimore, Maryland , was decommissioned, converted to "ARL-8", named "Egeria 3" in November, 1943 and recommissioned on30 March 1944 with Lieutenant A. H. Wilson, USNR, in command. After sailing through thePanama Canal toSan Diego and taking on supplies, she departed forPearl Harbor , and then toEniwetok Lagoon where she remained from21 June to16 July 1944 repairing damaged ships in that area. On17 July she joined a task unit bound forGuam where she effected repairs to vessels, and thereafter proceeded toSaipan ,Tinian ,Leyte Gulf ,Lingayen Gulf ,Kerama Retto , andOkinawa , rendering her vital repair services to the ships of the fleet damaged by weather and battle. Following a period of overhaul, in June 1945 she proceeded to Saipan and returned to Pearl Harbor where she converted LCIs for service as transports. Following decommissioning she was placed in the Pacific Reserve Fleet in January, 1947. Struck from theNaval Vessel Register and turned over to the Maritime Administration (MARAD) for disposal, she was sold by MARAD1 June 1980 . "Egeria" was scrapped in 1980.References
