North Norway . It is largest island inNorway (except forSvalbard ) with an area of convert|2204.7|km2|sp=us. It has a population of 31,851 (2006). The western part of Hinnøya belongs to the district ofVesterålen , and the southwestern tip to the district ofLofoten . The major settlement is the city ofHarstad . Some villages scatter the island, among themLødingen ,Sigerfjord andBorkenes .Geographically divided between the counties
Troms (Harstad andKvæfjord municipalities) andNordland (Andøy ,Hadsel ,Lødingen ,Sortland ,Tjeldsund andVågan ), Hinnøya is dissected by severalfjord s, and contains a mostly rugged and mountainous terrain. Especially the southern part, where theMøysalen National Park is located, including the highest mountain on the island,Møysalen , with its convert|1262|m|sp=us above sea level. The best agricultural area is in the northeast, in Harstad and Kvæfjord municipalities.Hinnøya is connected to the mainland by theTjeldsund Bridge acrossTjeldsundet . To the west it is connected toLangøya by theSortland Bridge , and to the north toAndøya by theAndøy Bridge .Lofast , connectingLofoten to the mainland without any ferry crossings, was officially opened onDecember 1 2007 . The road is designated as the E10 and goes very close to Møysalen National Park.External links
