Alachua Steam Navigation and Canal Company

Florida state law chapter 3483, approved February 27, 1883, incorporated the Alachua Steam Navigation and Canal Company, owned by Andrew Howard, J. T. McMillan, N. D. Phillips, F. L. Selden, B. F. Jordan, W. W. Hampton and J. H. McMahon,
* to construct, equip and maintain and operate a canal from Wauberg Lake, in Alachua county, to and through Saw-grass Pond, Chacala, Payne's Prairie or Alachua Lake, and Sweet-water Branch, to or near the city of Gainesville; also a branch through Prairie Creek to Newman's Lake on the north; also a branch through Bevan's Arm to or near a point of the Atlantic, Gulf and West India Transit Company's Railroad.Construction was to begin within one year, with completion within seven years.
