History

For many years this station was rock WRQR "Rock 104.5". In the Fall 1997 Arbitron ratings, WRQR was the top station, with John Boy and Billy getting a lot of the credit, though co-owner Chuck Sullivan pointed out "We've got the best of the old rock and best of the new rock." [Lee Roberts, "Riffs/Junkyard Update; Bands in Clubs; WRQR Pops to Top of Local Radio Ratings," "Star-News", February 5, 1998.]

Kimberly "Night Nurse" McLaughlin-Smith aired a reggae show on WRQR on Sunday mornings. [John Staton, "Reggae Rising - Reggae Destiny Festival Offers Island Soul," "Star-News", September 25, 2003.]

In July 2004, NextMedia Group purchased WRQR, WAZO, and WMFD from Ocean Broadcasting LLC, and WKXB and WSFM from Sea-Comm Inc. [Bonnie Eksten, "Ocean Broadcasting, Sea-Comm Stations Sold to NextMedia - New Owner to Operate Locally," "Star-News", July 14, 2004.]

WRQR lost John Boy and Billy to WKXS-FM in December 2006. [Angela Mack, "Fans KISS Favorite Radio Station Goodbye," "Star-News", October 30, 2006.] On January 2, 2007, Two Guys Named Chris from Rock 92 in Greensboro, North Carolina began airing on WRQR, the first station other than Rock 92 to carry the show. ["'Two Guys Named Chris' Show Now Syndicated," "Greensboro News & Record", January 4, 2007.] The current format and letters moved March 31, 2008, from what is now WLGD in Jacksonville, North Carolina for a better signal in Wilmington.
