There is a strong GAA tradition in Abbeydorney. The local hurling team have been successful in fielding many great hurlers in particular from Quality row, such as John Lynn, Johnny Glavin and Paddy Welsh. They have 4 county championships to their name, the last been in 1974, when man of the match and all round true legend "Jackie Condon" scored a hat trick of goals. It has been a great disapiontment to there followers that Abbeydorney have failed to build on from there impressive and Stylish minor championship winning team of 1999, which included such hurlers as David Nolan, John Sheehan, Edward Sheehan and Robert Murphy all of who Abbeydorney greatly miss. The ladies on the other hand have been very successful. Abbeydorney Ladies Football Club was the feeding ground for the great Kerry Ladies teams of the 80's & 90's. In more recent years they put back to back All Ireland's together. They impressively won the Junior All Ireland Club title in 2004 and remarkably followed that a year later in 2005 with a stunning All Ireland Intermediate Club title, playing very open and attractive football along the way.
