Gaelic football for the Meath senior football team in the1980 s and1990 s. He also played club football for St. Michaels.He made his Championship debut in 1984 against Westmeath He won three All-Ireland titles under
Sean Boylan , in 1987, 1988 and 1996, sixLeinster titles, three National League titles and a Centenary Cup medal (this was a competition played to celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of the GAA). He also won fourGAA All Stars Awards in1988 ,1990 ,1991 and1996 . In 1996 he was namedTexaco Footballer of the Year andAll Stars Footballer of the Year .O'Connell was named on the
