Woolston School Language College was a large mixed secondary comprehensive school in south east Southampton, Hampshire, in the south of England. The most recent Ofsted inspection was on 10 October 2006. [Ofsted inspection report, visit of 10th October 2006] The school was a Specialist Language College for 11 to 16 year olds. There were around 770 pupils enrolled at the school.

As part of Southampton City Council's review of secondary schooling in the city, called Learning Futures, the school closed in July 2008. It merged with Grove Park Business and Enterprise College in the summer term of 2008 to become Oasis Academy Mayfield. The Woolston school site is still going to be used for KS4 students . The Grove Park site is being used for the KS3 students. Building work for the new school, run by Oasis Learning Community, will start in 2009 at the Grove site and is predicted to finish in 2011, at which point the Woolston site will be handed over to the Local Education Authority.

Uniform

The usual school uniform for boys was a plain white shirt, black trousers, black blazer with school logo and school tie. The uniform for girls was a white shirt or blouse, black trousers or skirt (has to be bellow knee), black school blazer with school logo and school tie. Black v-kneck jumpers were optional for both boys and girls. The school had two main, different ties. The KS3 was a red and black striped tie with a smaller yellow stripe separating the two main colours and the KS4 tie had a plain black background with the school logo, a viking boat, scattered over it. The prefect tie was a plain black tie with two small red and yellow stripes ,spaced at regular intervals,with the school logo located above the stripes, also at regular intervals.

Language college

The school taught French, Spanish and German. Mandarin was also available for year 9 students. The school aimed to provide quality language teaching by not just teaching the students the language but also about the culture, food and the geography. There were three teachers of Spanish, six of French, four of German and one of Mandarin.

School building

The school currently has facilities for english, maths, science (6 Labs), IT, DT, Humanities, Languages, Music, Art and Drama.Despite people saying the school has in-sufficient room for P.E, it has a large hall, fitness suite, changing and toilet facilities. The school also has a bus service to transport students to a large field and jumping area located behind Chambelayne Leisure Centre.The school has an off-site dinning building located a while down the road.The school is built in four main parts. The older part of the school dates back to the 1900s, is located on the north of the site and houses the humanities, languages and 1 IT room. The second part of the school is located to the west of the DT rooms, the staff corridor, the student office, 4 science labs and an IT room. The main part of the school houses the English and maths rooms. It also contains 2 science labs, 1 DT room and an art room. The newest part of the school is located to the east of the site. It houses the PE department, the music and drama rooms and the recording studio. It also on-joins to the PE hall. There is also a small building that contains a DT room and an art room.

Oasis Academy Mayfield

At the end of the 2008 spring term the school will shut it doors as Woolston School Language College and is going to be merged with Grove Park Business and Enterprise College. The school site is still going to be used for KS4 students until 2011, the predicted finishing time for the new building on the Grove site. Demolition of part of Grove Park will begin in 2009 and building will begin in the same year. The new school is going to be split across the two sites and shall be organised by placing all year 7, 8 and 9 students on the Grove Park Site and years 10 and 11 on the Woolston site. Its three deputy principals are Mrs Hanly, Mrs Hibbs and Mrs West. Most teachers will be placed at a specific site according to their abilities and skills. But some teachers will travel between sites. The new year 7 tutor team (Mentor Team) has been finalised and is as follows:

Celebration Week

On the week beginning 14th July 2008, Woolston School Language College held a celebration week. The week was all about the history of Woolston School, starting from its beginnings in the late 1800s and finishing in 2008. The week allowed all past teachers and pupils to come to the school and re-live their time there. On 18th July 2008, Woolston School Language College held its last ever Community Fayre, in which members of the public were able to come and enjoy the festivities. The monday was the last annual trip to Thorpe Park and for those students not attending there was a free cinema trip on the same day. Tuesday was an evening performance of the schools Grease musical at Itchen College. Wednesday was a community sports day for the whole school hosted at the field located behind Chamberlayne Leisure Center. The day envlolved tutor groups going head to head in football, rounders, kwick kwicket and tug of war. The Thursday was the reunion for past students, staff and governors. The Friday was the schools last community fare and was the very last day as Woolston school.
