market town in the district ofVillach-Land in theAustria n state of Carinthia. Originally amining area, especially forlead ( _de. Blei), Bad Bleiberg today due to itshot springs is aspa town . It consists of theKatastralgemeinden "Bleiberg" and "Kreuth".Bad Bleiberg is situated west of the district capital ofVillach on the northern slope of the "Dobratsch" massif, part of theGailtal Alps mountain range.King Henry II of Germany granted the area to the newly created Bishopric of Bamberg at the
Frankfurt synod of November 1,1007 . The mine was first mentioned as "Pleyberg" in a1333 deed and operated by theFugger family in the15th century .Georg Agricola described the mining and smelting of lead andzinc in his1556 bookDe Re Metallica . In1759 the Bamberg estates were acquired byMaria Theresa of Austria . The mine was closed in1993 for economic reasons.When in
1951 a hot spring flooded an adit, a public bath was established and Bleiberg received the official "Bad" title of a spa town in1978 .Twin town
