SMK Bandar Utama

SMK Bandar Utama

SMK Bandar Utama is a school located within the Damansara subdivision of the Petaling district in the state of Selangor, Malaysia.

History

Opened officially in 1998 with 375 students initially, the school now has more than 1500 students enrolled. It was the first secondary school to be opened in Bandar Utama. As of 2008, it has had four headmistresses inclusive of the current one.

Co-curriculum

SMK Bandar Utama is highly active and participates in various competitions and activities. The most prominent product of the school is its athletes. Holding the title of Overall Champion three years in a row for the Petaling Jaya District Cross-Country Championship, SMK Bandar Utama athletes such as Shanti Armom, Arivinthakumar and Sathiaraj Rajoo have been representatives of the Petaling Jaya District and State of Selangor.

Each year, the Domino's Pizza Safety Rodeo holds its safety rodeo in SMK Bandar Utama. The safety rodeo holds various competitions and games to increase safety awareness on roads. The school choir is also a highly active co-curricular outfit, having participated in various inter-school competitions as well as having contributed in terms of performances out of school.

SMK Bandar Utama is also noted for actively participating in the various debating, public speaking, drama and newspaper publishing competitions in the district, state as well as at the national level. Although it has yet to establish itself as a main player in the abovementioned fields, the school does appear to be steadily elevating itself from its position as an underdog through its various wins such as in the Datuk Wira Arshad Debates 2007, 2005 and 2004. It has also been the focus of extensive media coverage during the annual The Star National Best School Newspaper Competition in 2003, 2004 and 2005.

The school magazine, Jejak Utama charts a short but pertinent legacy of annual publications beginning from the year 2000, with the 2004 edition significantly published in hardcover.

Facilities

The school compound is minimalistic at best. 3 main blocks are dedicated to classrooms, laboratories, the staff room, the library, the general office, the Muslim prayer room and the toilets (in decreasing order of the extent of floor space taken up). A canteen with a dining area and a separate teachers' lounge is located closest to the main gates. A horticulture shed stands near a two-storey computer lab which is arguably the most recent installment in the compound.

The school has also prided itself on the construction of an artificial waterfall as an aesthetic installment.
