SMP Negeri 5 Bandung was founded in 1920 by the Dutch, when Indonesia was still part of the Dutch colony. The Dutch did not allow Indonesian to join the classes because Indonesians were slaves to them, and slaves were not allowed to be educated. The study took 5 years, from year 1 to year 5.

When the Japanese took over the colonization in the 1940's, they changed the name and function of the building from "MULO" to "Kompetai", which function was a torture chamber.

Post-Independence

After Indonesia gained independence in 1945, and the Indonesian government took over, the function of Kompetai switched back to educational building using the name "MULO". Then in the 1950's, Mr. Fernandus, a Dutch, was appointed principal, and the name was changed to SMP Negeri 5 Bandung, which is held until now. Indonesians were permitted to attend the classes.

School's mosque, the Riyadlul Jannah was also built in his time.

Mr. Ateng Tisna Suwandi took over Mr. Drs. R. P. Hartoyo's position, and his term lasted for 3 years. In his time he made significant changes to the school; the construction of new teacher's lounge and new lavatory for students. Then, the ninth principal, Mr. Edi Parmadi, made another physical changes to the buildings, and reconstructed the school's front yard.

In about the year 2000, Mr. Edi's position was substituted by Mr. Drs. H. Nandi Supriadi, S. Pd., MBA. And in 2005, Mr. Drs. H. Dradjat Sudradjat, M. M. Pd., which is the current principal.
