George C. Pidgeon

The Very Reverend George Campbell Pidgeon (March 2 1872 - June 15 1971) was a Presbyterian Church in Canada and United Church of Canada minister. He was ordained in 1894 and earned his Doctor of Divinity from Montreal's Presbyterian College. Pidgeon served congregations first in Montreal West (now Montreal West United Church) and the Toronto area at Streetsville--Toronto Township (now Mississauga) then in West Toronto Junction, then taught theology at Westminster Hall in Vancouver from 1909 until 1915. He returned to downtown Toronto and served as minister of Bloor Street Presbyterian->United Church) until his retirement in 1948. He worked for the merger of the Presbyterian, Methodist and Congregationalist Churches in Canada into the United Church in 1925, was the last moderator of the pre-Union Presbyterian Church and became the first Moderator of the United Church of Canada, serving for one year.

Pidgeon was a supporter of the temperance movement, home missionary service and ecumenical organizations such as the Canadian Council of Churches and the World Council of Churches.
