Susan Winder Tanner (born
January 10 ,1953 ) was the twelfth general president of theYoung Women organization ofThe Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) from 2002 until April 2008.Born in Granger,
Utah toRichard W. Winder and Barbara Woodhead, Tanner grew up on the family homestead atWinder Dairy . She earned a degree in humanitites fromBrigham Young University . She was called by Church PresidentGordon B. Hinckley as the general president of the Young Women organization onOctober 5 ,2002 , succeedingMargaret D. Nadauld . As president of the Young Women, Tanner was anex officio member of the church's Board of Education. From 2002 to 2007, Tanner's counselors in the Young Women general presidency wereJulie B. Beck andElaine S. Dalton . From 2007 to 2008, Dalton was her first counselor andMary N. Cook was her second counselor. In 2008, Tanner was succeeded as president of the Young Women by her first counselor Dalton.Tanner married John S. Tanner in the
Salt Lake Temple onSeptember 3 ,1974 . They currently live inProvo, Utah and are the parents of five children. She is a great-great granddaughter of church leaderJohn R. Winder .References
