Webster County was created by an act of the
Georgia General Assembly onDecember 16 th, 1853, as Kinchafoonee County. A subsequent legislative act onFebruary 21 st, 1856, changed the name to Webster. The land for the county came from portions of Stewart County.The County is named for
Daniel Webster , U.S. representative ofNew Hampshire and U.S. representative and U.S. senator ofMassachusetts . Webster County's original name of Kinchafoonee comes from theKinchafoonee Creek which runs through the county.Geography

As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 2,390 people, 911 households, and 675 families residing in the county. Thepopulation density was 11 people per square mile (4/km²). There were 1,115 housing units at an average density of 5 per square mile (2/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 50.50% White, 47.03% Black or African American, 0.08% Native American, 1.59% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. 2.76% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.There were 911 households out of which 31.90% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.90% were married couples living together, 16.80% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.90% were non-families. 23.50% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.10% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.07.
In the county the population was spread out with 25.20% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 27.70% from 25 to 44, 24.10% from 45 to 64, and 14.80% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 101.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.00 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $27,992, and the median income for a family was $32,462. Males had a median income of $26,444 versus $19,125 for females. The
per capita income for the county was $14,772. About 17.20% of families and 19.30% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 26.00% of those under age 18 and 19.40% of those age 65 or over.Cities and towns
