It earns its name from the black striped tail and sides, which are reminiscent of the insignia of a militarySergeant , being similar to those of theSergeant Major damselfish. It grows to a length of about 16 cm (6 in).Scissortail seargents are
coral reef dwelling fish, living at depths of up to 15 m (50 ft) intropical reaches, often living in a group surrounding a single head ofcoral . They are found on reefs in the Indo-Pacific area.The fish feed upon the
larva e ofinvertebrate s,zooplankton , smaller fishes,crustacean s and various species ofalgae . They are preyed upon by some members of theLabridae andSerranidae families. They lay their eggs in patches on a firm substrate and guard them vigorously until they hatch.Etymology of name
Although named "Abudefduf sexfasciatus" by Lacépède in 1801, an attempt was later made to change this to "Glyphisodon coelestinus" by Cuvier in 1830. Although this received support from natural scientists at the time, the current name is now almost exclusively used.
