Japanese warship Hōshō

Japanese warship Hōshō

"Hōshō" (Japanese:鳳翔, meaning "flying phoenix") was a steam warship of the Choshu Province during the Bakumatsu and early Meiji period in Japan. She was built in England.

She is famous for allowing 330 Satsuma ronin agitators to escape from Edo in January 1868, and she fought during the Boshin War.

She was transferred to the Imperial Japanese Navy after July 1869, following the Meiji restoration.

Japan's first aircraft carrier was also named "Hōshō".
