Ian Brownlie,
CBE ,QC , FBA, is a British jurist, specialising ininternational law . He wascalled to the Bar in 1958 (Gray's Inn ).During his academic career he taught at the
University of Leeds , theUniversity of Nottingham , andWadham College, Oxford . He was a professor of international law at theLondon School of Economics between 1976 and 1980. From 1980 to 1999 he wasChichele Professor of Public International Law at theUniversity of Oxford and a Distinguished Fellow ofAll Souls College, Oxford .He served as an advisor to U.S. President
Jimmy Carter during the 1979Iranian Hostage Crisis . The cases in which he has argued before theInternational Court of Justice include "Nicaragua v. United States ,Nauru v. Australia ,Bosnia and Herzegovina v. Serbia and Montenegro , andLibya v. United Kingdom and v. United States;" he has also argued several important cases before theEuropean Court of Human Rights , including "Cyprus v. Turkey ." He also representedAmnesty International at theextradition trial ofChile an coup-leaderAugusto Pinochet before the English courts in 1999. Since 1997 he has been a member of theUnited Nations 'International Law Commission .He is a
Fellow of the British Academy and his memberships include theInternational Law Association and theInstitut de Droit International . In 2006 he was awarded theWolfgang Friedmann Memorial Award for international law.Publications
