- Wireless Oakland
Wireless Oakland is an initiative in
Oakland County, Michigan to blanket the County's 910 square miles with wireless Internet service.Rollout
On October 31, 2005, the Wireless Oakland Project Team selected Pontiac, Michigan based MichTel Communications, LLC to provide the service. The wireless Oakland website appears to in some places indicate that several private sector partners will operate the network, but in others indicate that MichTel will be the sole provider.
"The County's private-sector partners will own, operate and maintain the project", the web site says. "Free internet service will be offered at the lower bandwidth, but the private sector partners will charge fees for higher-end service".
The free service will be 128 kbit/s up and down. The for-fee services and pricing packages can be found on the MichTel website.
After much delay, pilot area rollout has begun. Several of the above depicted poletop radios, which are clearly labeled as being manufactured by Cisco and owned by MichTel, have begun to spring up in southern Oakland County. These radios are up and providing access to their network, SSID "Wireless Oakland", which greets the user with a login page. Users are allowed to enter any data they wish to sign up for a free account. As of May 2007, the phase I pilot is operational.
