New York onAugust 14 1817 . He graduated fromPrinceton College in 1837, where he studied law and later was admitted to the bar and commenced practice, thereafter.examiner in chancery ofGreene County, New York 1840 - 1842; justice of the peace of the town of Catskill for four years; member of the State assembly in 1849; judge of Greene County 1851 - 1855; moved toRome, New York in 1856 and continued the practice of law; served in the State senate 1861 - 1864; elected as a Republican to the Fortieth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation ofRoscoe Conkling ; reelected to the Forty-first Congress and served fromNovember 30 1867 toMarch 3 1871 ; chairman,Committee on Expenditures in the Department of State (Forty-first Congress); was not a candidate for renomination in 1870; elected judge of the Oneida County Court in 1871 and served until his death in Rome, New York onApril 20 1874 ; interment in Rome Cemetery.External links
