Australasian Masters Games

The Australasian Masters Games is Australia’s largest Multi-sport eventFact|date=June 2007.It is aimed at older competitors, the minimum age requirement is 30 years for most sports.

The 2009 Australian Masters Games will be held in Geelong, Victoria.

History

The Australasian games have grown out of the success of the Australian games, a biennial event which began in Tasmania in 1987. Since then, the Games have been held in Adelaide (1989), Brisbane (1991), Perth (1993), Melbourne (1995), Canberra (1997), Adelaide (1999), Newcastle (2001), Canberra (2003) and Adelaide (2005). The past five Games have each attracted over 10,000 participants and several thousand accompanying family and friends.

The new games will be held in Adelaide in 2007, 2011 and 2015 and will incorporate the Australian Masters Games. The 2009 Australian Masters Games will be held in Geelong, Victoria.

Aims

The Confederation of Australian Sport (CAS) is the owner of this event which promotes and encourages mature age individuals to participate in sport regardless of background or ability. While the competition is important, one of the key attractions of the Games is the social interaction and spirit of camaraderie experienced by participants.

The philosophy behind the Games is:

# To promote the concept of “Sport for All”
# To promote the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle
# To promote the benefits of a long term commitment to sport
# To offer an extensive choice of competition options that cater for all ability levels
# To provide a friendly and vibrant atmosphere for all Games participants and their guests

The Opening Ceremony will be held at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on 6 October, with a performance by singer Marcia Hines. On 13 October, participants can enjoy the best of Australia’s food, wine and live bands when the Closing Ceremony meets with the “Tasting Australia” festival at Elder Park on the banks of Adelaide’s River Torrens. What’s more, the Games Centre, SKYCITY Adelaide, will offer nightly entertainment over the ten days of festivities.
