Wayne Brittain

Wayne Brittain is a former coach of the Australian Football League.

Career

In his playing career, he did not play in the AFL, instead he played for Zillmere Eagles in the Queensland State League. He eventually suffered a back injury which ended his career. He was an experienced player so the AFL allowed him to take up coaching.

Wayne coached the Carlton Football Club from 2001 until 2002. He was sacked at the end of the 2002 season after the club finished last for the first time in its history.

He served as assistant coach at Carlton under David Parkin and was credited with much of the club's success in the 2000 home and away season.

His first year as senior coach was lackluster, with the club turning in match winning performances against Premieres Essendon twice that year; struggling for consistency the club finished sixth overall and played two games in the finals series. The following year the club finished last for the first time in its history, winning only three games.

Brittain inherited a very old playing list that was plagued with injuries to key players in 2002 such as Anthony Koutafidies, Brett Ratten and Andrew McKay. The club had also failed to fill the hole left in the back line left by the retirement of Stephen Silvagni the year before.

After being Sacked from Carlton in favour of Denis Pagan at the end of the 2002 season, Brittain went on to be an assistant coach at Richmond under Danny Frawley. for the 2003 and 2004 seasons. at the end of the 2004 season Brittain left as Richmond assistant coach after Danny Frawley was sacked. Brittain returned to Queensland to coach his old club the Zillmere Eagles in 2005, but was sacked by the club after being fined for abusing the umpires after a Zillmere loss.

On September 15, 2008 He Became the Assistant coach of Brisbane Lions under Michael Voss

He is one of the few people to coach an AFL side that never played in the AFL others being Neil Craig, Mark Riley.
