The construction of the Interstate Highway System in Washington actually began well before these routes were designated as Interstate Highways. Interstates 5, 90, 82, and 405 were part of Washington's primary and secondary highway system that exisited from 1937 to 1970. Planning is ongoing for a proposed bypass around Seattle called Interstate 605. The route is planned to be a length of convert|40|mi|km|1.
