Brahmo Balika Shikshalaya

Brahmo Balika Shikshalaya, popularly called "Brahmo Girls School", located at "294 APC Roy Road, Kolkata 700009", is a Bengali-medium girls' school founded by the Brahmo Samaj. The school motto is "Shraddhaya, Tapasha, Sevaya", which means "Respect, Judgement, Service" in English.

This school had a prominent place in disseminating education among Bengali women, at that time of Nineteenth century. Pundit Shibnath Shastri was the visionary and founder of this school, who was also an eminent social and Brahmo religious leader of that time.

If we look back to the history of that time, it was the second school for girls in Calcutta. The first school for girls was founded by John Elliot Drinkwater Bethune.

The first graduate Indian woman Kadambini Bose, was a student of this school.

The school was named as "Shikshalaya" (that means, where a total education is pledged, both the knowledge from books and enlightenment values). Going above and beyond the basic core of formal education, the curricula includes: music, drama, needle work, various sports, self-defence techniques like karate, and more. The motto of this school is "Shradhhaya-Tapasa-Sevaya", which means that in every step of life one should respect others, always try to improve herself to reach the goal of her life, and always help others as much as possible.
