- Alliance for Justice
Alliance for Justice (AFJ) is a national association of environmental,
civil rights ,mental health , women's, children's andconsumer advocacy organizations in theUSA .Since its inception in 1979, Alliance for Justice has worked to advance the cause of justice for all Americans, strengthen the public interest community's ability to influence public policy, and foster the next generation of advocates.
Alliance for Justice focuses on four main areas of advocacy, representing Judicial, Foundation, Nonprofit, and Student interests.
Judicial Advocacy
Through the Judicial Selection Project, AFJ monitors and investigates judicial nominations at all levels of the federal branch, and encourages public participation in the confirmation process.
AFJ also offers the [http://www.independentjudiciary.org Independent Judiciary] website to engage Americans in the federal judicial nomination process by providing relevant news and information regarding current federal court nominations.
Through projects such as the Independent Judiciary, Alliance for Justice has taken the lead in raising public awareness about the significant impact the federal judiciary has on the nation and its citizens. AFJ also keeps readers informed of current issues involving the courts with two blogs: [http://www.afj.org/fullcourtpress.html Full Court Press] and [http://www.afj.org.justicedigest.html Justice Digest] . Full Court Press focuses on judicial opinions that influence Americans’ legal rights and protections and help shape American law and life. Justice Digest concentrates on news and information regarding judicial nominations and other issues that affect the federal courts of the United States.
Nonprofit Advocacy
Since the founding of AFJ in 1979, encouraging and educating nonprofit advocates has been a major focus.
A primary mission of Alliance for Justice is to strengthen the capacity of the public interest community to influence public policy. The [http://www.afj.org/nonprofit/ Nonprofit Advocacy Project] assists nonprofit organizations in this area through technical assistance, workshops, and a wealth of tools and information. Current issues affecting nonprofit advocacy that AFJ is involved with include: campaign finance, grassroots lobbying simplification, partisan electoral activity by charities, online advocacy, section 527 organizations (“soft PACs”), and restrictions on advocacy activity. [http://www.afj.org/nonprofit/workshops_events/index.html Workshops] provide an in-depth overview of the legal rules for nonprofits wishing to engage in lobbying and election work. Nonprofit advocacy workshops focus on topics that help groups navigate the public policy advocacy process, such as election, lobbying and advocacy rules.
Foundation Advocacy
The [http://www.afj.org/foundation/index.html Foundation Advocacy Initiative] (FAI) was established to increase foundation support to organizations that seek to influence policy and public opinion. FAI is committed to assisting foundations to understand and navigate the tax regulations to enable them to support advocacy.
The Foundation Advocacy Initiative helps foundations in these efforts through workshops, examples of documents, and technical assistance.
tudent Advocacy
One of Alliance for Justice’s primary goals is to provide educational resources to support the next generation of advocates.
Every year on the first Monday in October, the opening of the Supreme Court's session, [http://www.allianceforjustice.org/student/student_action_campaign/index.html Student Action Campaign] unites student activists on college, university, and law school campuses nationwide to fight for social justice.
Student Action Campaign is a campus-based program designed to raise awareness about vital social justice issues. Past campaigns have explored issues such as housing and homelessness, the death penalty,
gun violence , and post-9/11 civil liberties.External links
