Cyrillic _tt. Шиһабетдин Мәрҗани, Arabic _tt. شہاب الدین مرجانی, also spelled Shihabetdin Marjani [commonly transliterated "Shigabuddin" "Mardzhani" or "Mardjani" via Russian ( _ru. Шигабуддин Марджани) and "Shihab ad-Din al-Marjani" via Arabic ( _ar. شہاب الدین مرجانی)] ; 1818-1889) was a Tatar theologian and historian.He studied in
madrassa s ofTashkichu (Kazan Uyezd ,Kazan Governorate ,Russian Empire ),Bukhara andSamarqand . Since 1850 he is animam of the First Cathedral Mosque, since 1867 he is amuhtasib ofKazan . At the same time, in 1876-1884 he lectured religion in the Tatar Teachers' School. Märcani became the first Muslim member of "The Society for Archaeology, History and Ethnography" atKazan State University . In his papers he illustrate his ideas about the renovation and the perfection of the Tatar educational system. As a historian, he was the first Tatar historian to employ the European methodology, however, proceeding with the traditions of the Oriental scholars. He is an author of more than 30 volumes about Tatar history.Notes
