Seven vessels of the
Royal Navy have been named HMS "Juno" after the Roman goddess* The first "Juno" was a 32-gun ship launched in
1757 was afifth rate sailing frigate which was burnt on7 August 1778 to prevent capture by revolutionary forces atRhode Island during theAmerican Revolutionary War .
* The second "Juno" was a 32-gunfifth rate Amazon-class frigate launched in1780 and she was broken up in1811 .
* The third "Juno" was asixth rate 26-gun ship launched in1844 and later renamed "Mariner". As thetraining ship "Atalanta", she disappeared with her entire crew of around 280 after setting sail fromBermuda forEngland on31 January 1880 . It was presumed that she sank in a powerfulstorm which crossed her route a couple weeks after she sailed.
* The fourth "Juno" was a wooden-hulled steamcorvette launched in1867 and in1887 .
* The fifth "Juno", launched in1895 , was an "Eclipse"-class protectedcruiser .
* The sixth "Juno", launched in 1938, J-classdestroyer . She served inWorld War II and was sunk offCrete by Italian bombers on21 May 1941 .
* The last "Juno" (F52), launched in 1965, was a "Leander"-classfrigate . She was scrapped in 1994.References
