- Freedom Campaign
The Freedom Campaign is a joint venture of the
Human Rights Action Center andUS Campaign for Burma non-profit organizations. The Freedom Campaign is focused on the advocacy and empowerment of individuals whose lives are shining testaments topeace andhuman rights . Its Honorary Chairs are Nobel Peace Prize recipient ArchbishopDesmond Tutu and former Czech Republic PresidentVaclav Havel .By building awareness of global peacemakers, and bringing to light the struggles that hinder their efforts, the Freedom Campaign assists in spreading their message globally, and inevitably overturning their censorship.
Currently, the Freedom Campaign is focused on drawing worldwide attention to
Aung San Suu Kyi , the world's only imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize recipient, and the struggles of the people living in Burma. Through music, film, and art projects, the campaign's aims to give voice to Aung San Suu Kyi's messages of courage and human rights.Current Projects
Through music, film, art, and various entertainment mediums, the Freedom Campaign is buildinghuman rights awareness one project at a time. To date, current projects include:
• Documentary Film (Summer 2007), "Freedom from Fear", narrated by Academy Awardwinning actress
Anjelica Huston , the film explores the life ofAung San Suu Kyi and thestruggles of the people inBurma . When complete, the film will be submitted to various filmfestivals in hopes of gaining more awareness. The film will also be screened secretly insideBurma and broadcast via satellite into the authoritarian ruled country.• Concert Series to raise awareness of Aung San Suu Kyi and human rights violations inBurma. Entertainment will include well-known talent both nationally and internationally. Pastmusic events have included R.E.M., the
Black Eyed Peas ,Damien Rice , andWynton Marsalis .• Freedom Campaign Awards Dinner & Fundraising Gala to honor human rights activists andadvocates over the past 25 years who have made an invaluable impact on the world, and toraise awareness of current Freedom Campaign issues. Set for December 10th, Human RightsDay, and the 59th anniversary of the signing of the
Universal Declaration of Human Rights .
