census GR|2 of 2000, there were 22,094 people, 7,927 households, and 5,215 families residing in the county. Thepopulation density was 79 people per square mile (30/km²). There were 8,985 housing units at an average density of 32 per square mile (12/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 95.98% White, 1.56% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.89% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 0.97% from two or more races. 1.06% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.There were 7,927 households out of which 30.50% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.40% were married couples living together, 10.20% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.20% were non-families. 27.00% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.20% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.91.
The age distribution was 20.30% under the age of 18, 23.50% from 18 to 24, 25.90% from 25 to 44, 20.00% from 45 to 64, and 10.40% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. Both the unusually large portion of the population in the 18-to-24 range and the relatively low median age are mainly because of the presence of
Morehead State University . For every 100 females there were 94.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.10 males.The median income for a household in the county was $28,055, and the median income for a family was $34,338. Males had a median income of $26,777 versus $20,104 for females. The
