Martin W Kellogg (July 2, 1905 – December 26, 1989) was an American portrait painter.
He was born in Hartford, Connecticut. His family home was in Hartford, which was passed down though many generations. His last known address was in Nashville, Davidson, Tennessee. He lived in West Hartford and Bloomfield, Connecticut as well as Nashville, Tennessee during his working career. As a young man he had lived in the Boston area and attended the Boston Art School. He painted a portrait of Stephanie Zimbalist the sister of Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. as a young woman but would not sell it to her parents as he didn't want the picture "out there." Among other portraits, he painted John Hill who was president of Aetna Insurance in Hartford in the 1960s, Frank L Boyden, headmaster of Deerfield Academy (MA) (1902–1968) and Wallace W Robbins, Minister of the First Unitarian Church in Worcester, MA from 1956 to 1975. He married Earlene Taylor and had children James, Pamela, Debra, Gregory and Tamara.
He also painted the governor of Tennessee, Governor W. Dunn, as well as many more which can be seen at the capital. He was known for his detail. Many of his art works he would have the client hide by clothing or other means imperfections they might have, because if it was there he painted as he saw them, he never wavered from this. An oil on canvas portrait of James Nance McCord, governor of Tennessee, was painted in 1949 and is at the State Museum in Nashville (http://www.tnportraits.org). This and other early portraits can be seen on this website, a project of the Colonial Dames of America in Tennessee. (http://www.tnportraits.org/artists.htm)
He had a passion for English setters, which he bred, raised, trained and showed in championship field trial competitions. He took his dogs out daily for long training sessions, many times breaking the day up with several of his friends, due to his stamina they could not keep up with him. He kept and raised his dogs until his death.
