Sir Basil Goulding, 3rd Baronet

Sir William Basil Goulding (born 4 November 1909 in Dublin, Ireland; died 16 January 1982 in County Wicklow [http://www.cricketarchive.co.uk/Archive/Players/26/26757/26757.html Cricket Archive profile] ] ) was an Irish cricketer, squash player and art collector.

RAF service

During World War II, Goulding was commissioned as a pilot officer in the Royal Air Force. By the end of 1942 he had reached the rank of wing commander. In addition to playing cricket, he also represented Ireland at squash, and captained Oxford University at football.

Personal life

Educated at Winchester, Goulding's main career was as an art collector. He was married to Valerie Goulding, an Irish campaigner for disabled people and senator. Her father, Sir Walter Monckton was a lawyer, and was the UK Attorney General during the Edward VIII abdication crisis [http://content-uk.cricinfo.com/ci/content/player/17638.html Cricinfo profile for Walter Monkton] ] , later serving as a British Member of Parliament for Bristol West, serving as defence minister and Paymaster-General. He also played cricket, and played one first-class match for a combined Oxford/Cambridge University team. Basil's uncle was chairman of Rolls Royce.
