St. Mary Medical Center (SMMC) is a hospital in Long Beach, California, USA. It is currently operated by Catholic Healthcare West. SMMC has all private acute care rooms for patients.

In December 1983, the emergency department at SMMC was designated as a level I trauma center for adults. This was changed to level II in 1992. The hospital also has a heart center, orthopedic institute, cancer center and pediatrics and maternity services.

History

The original building was called the Long Beach Sanitarium, and was owned by a local physician. In 1923, the physician decided to sell the hospital. Rev. J. M. Hegarty, the pastor of St. Anthony Catholic Church, asked the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word to purchase the hospital.
