Soldier's Rest

Soldier's Rest is a historical farmhouse located in Berryville, Virginia. Constructed in 1769, it was converted into a Confederate military hospital during the American Civil War. Local tradition has it that the home and the grounds surrounding it (particularly the fallow hay field, where many Confederate soldiers died) are haunted by the spirits of those who perished there.

History

The home was owned for years by the wealthy Harbrick family, some of the earliest settlers in the town and powerful slaveholders. Darius Harbrick was the first known resident of the building.

During the American Revolution, which began a mere six year's after construction had been completed, Harbrick provided refuge to Patriots fleeing British officials, and he also covertly supplied the rebels with cash and weapons. When independence was declared in 1776, Harbrick came out publicly on the side of the Americans.
