Antonio Lanzavecchia (born
October 9 ,1951 ) is an Italian immunologist. He was born inVarese ,Italy . In 1976 he obtained his degree with honors inMedicine at theUniversity of Pavia where he specialized inPediatrics andInfectious Diseases . From 1983 to 1999 he was a member of theBasel Institute for Immunology and in 1999 became director of theInstitute for Research in Biomedicine inBellinzona ,Switzerland . He has beenProfessor ofImmunology at theUniversity of Genoa and at theUniversity of Siena . Dr. Lanzavecchia’sresearch has covered several aspects ofhuman immunology : antigen processing and presentation, dendritic cell biology, lymphocyte activation and traffic and, more recently, the cellular basis of T and B cell memory and the production of human monoclonal antibodies. He awarded theEMBO medal in 1988, theCloëtta prize in 1999 and he has been nominatedCavaliere della Repubblica in 2001.Research Activities
