League of American Writers

The League of American Writers was an organization of American writers with ties to the Communist Party USA.

It was formed in April 1935 during the First Americans Writers Congress (April 26-27, 1935). Waldo David Frank was its first president.Days of Anger, Days of Hope, Franklin Folsom, "University Press of Colorado", 1994, ISBN 0870813323 ]

Franklin Folsom served as executive secretary from 1937 to 1942.

Political activism

As a communist front, the League supported many leftist causes.

They formed a "Keep America Out of War Committee" in January 1940. Its members were::Ben Bengal, Lillian Hellman, Arthur Kober, Dashiell Hammett, Alter Brody, Lawrence A. Goldstone, Henry Hart, Edwin Berry Burgum, Henry Goodman, George Sklar, Charles A. Wagner, Fannie Engle, George Asness, Eleanor Flexner, Len Zinberg, Shaemas O'Sheel, James Neugass, and Sonia Raiziss

The League ended its anti-war stance after Germany invaded the Soviet Union.
