"San Francisco Rush: Extreme Racing" is a Arcade style racing video game developed by Atari Games and published by Midway Games for the Arcade, Nintendo 64, and for the Playstation. It was released for the arcade in 1996 in North America. Then later it came to the Nintendo 64 on November 8, 1997 in North America, and December 8, 1997 in Europe. Then it was released for the Playstation on February 28, 1998 in North America, and April 2, 1998 in Europe. It's the first game in the Rush series and it takes place in a completely fictionalized San Francisco, California and contains six tracks from famous locations in the area.

"San Francisco Rush The Rock: Alcatraz Edition" was later released for the Arcade in 1997 in North America. Which featured an extra track based on elaborate fantasies of San Francisco, California's Alcatraz.

"San Francisco Rush: Extreme Racing" was later released for the Nintendo 64 that combines the orignal "San Francisco Rush: Extreme Racing" and "San Francisco Rush The Rock: Alcatraz Edition". As well as added featues that weren't from the orignal arcade verison. "San Francisco Rush: Extreme Racing" was later ported to the Playstation, but it didn't inculde the features that the Nintendo 64 verison had. Then it was replaced by Explosive Mode, which it was not featured in the orignal arcade verison.

"San Francisco Rush The Rock: Alcatraz Edition" was later ported as part of Midway Arcade Treasures 3 for the Playstation 2, Xbox, and for the Gamecube. The Playstation 2 and Xbox verison of the emulation has sound issues, but it was fixed in the Gamecube verison.

Features

The game is notable because of the high level of detail that went into recreating the city of San Francisco and the fast arcade-style physics and exaggeration of gravity. The game also features a two-player mode and rumble pack support. Hidden shortcuts and jumps add to the replay value of the game. There are also keys to be found which can unlock extra vehicles.

Game modes

There are six tracks in the game, with mirror and reverse options to make a total of 24 variants to race on. Modes include death race, circuit, time trial and race. In the N64 version, once the circuit mode has been beaten and a special code is entered, a seventh track, Alcatraz, is unlocked.
