Neotyphodium australiense is a systemic and seed-transmissible symbiont of Echinopogon ovatus, a grass endemic to Australia and New Zealand / Aotearoa.[1] To date, N. australiense has only been found in some Australian populations of this grass, whereas other populations in Australia and New Zealand have Neotyphodium aotearoae. Molecular phylogenetic analysis indicates that N. australiense is an interspecific hybrid, and that its closest teleomorphic (sexual) relatives are Epichloë festucae and Epichloë typhina.
