There he won the gold medal in the Men's 50 km Track Race.
In that Olympic race, Willems worked together with Jan Maas. From the tenth kilometer, Maas attacked, and the other cyclists had to spend energy, trying to get Maas back. In the end, 15 cyclists remained, and Willems, who was the better sprinter, won the race.[1]
