Low Country and Chesapeake Society
- Low Country and Chesapeake Society
The Low Country & Chesapeake Society was a virtual think tank founded in Connecticut in March 2004 by a group of African-American political activists of varied ideological and partisan backgrounds. The group's goal was to provide an "alternative political center" for black American political thought, rejecting both the liberal Black Political Consensus [http://www.blackcommentator.com/17_analysis.html] and countervailing Black Conservatism efforts as monolithic and overly-simplistic. Low Country held that "Black America had entered a new era--a post Civil Rights era that requires new political software to map a different course to Black advancement." Its membership consisted of African-American political activists, writers, and thinkers active in Democratic, Republican, Libertarian, Green, and Independent circles across the United States.
Low Country's founder, Webster Brooks, published the group's online journal, "The Low Country Movement," which featured the works of the organization's "associates." (Noteworthy contributors include Conaway B. Haskins, III and Benin "Beni" Dakar). The group held a public policy conference in Silver Spring, MD on February 19, 2005 with attendees from various states. However, attempts to gain momentum toward developing a more formal organizational structure failed due to shifting state and national political dynamics and divergent interests of associates. After Brooks launched an eventually-aborted 2008 presidential campaign, Low Country officially disbanded and the on-line journal ceased publication. In October 2005, Webster Brooks made the following closing statement [http://newleadership.blogspot.com/2005/11/when-good-political-movements-go-bad.html] which the membership accepted as the final act of the Low Country & Chesapeake Society:
"I am recommending dissolution of the Low Country and Chesapeake Society…I would like to offer my apologies for not providing the level of leadership needed to move Low Country toward…objectives we achieved consensus on…despite some initial small successes in offering the public an alternative viewpoint, we lacked agreement of a common political outlook required to flourish at a higher level…The national political landscape is very fluid and the demand for genuine political change and reforms will continue to grow rather than be diminished."
