History
"RCM&E" was first published in 1960. The hobby has changed immensely in the years since then. Hobbyists in 1960 really had to make everything themselves. Today model planes are bought off-the-shelf and ready to fly, but in 1960 a flyer wouldn't have that luxury. Radio equipment, servos, receivers, and of course the models themselves all had to be made. In these early years the magazine reflected this with articles covering subjects that involved basic to advanced electronics; if you wanted a receiver you'd have to make one and accumulate the skills required along the way. Unsurprisingly, R/C equipment wasn't particularly reliable and it wasn't until the early '70s that flyers could buy affordable R/C equipment from a model shop. Even then the reliability of the gear wasn't as good as you'll find today.
