Matica crnogorska

Matica crnogorska is a Montenegrin cultural institution. The name can be literally translated into English as the "Montenegrin queen bee," which is a metaphor meaning "the parent body of the Montenegrins."

It is a non-governmental organization which promotes Montenegrin identity and the Montenegrin language.

The Matica was one of the country's firm supporters of independence.

History

Matica crnogorska was formed on 22 May 1993 in Cetinje. In 2000, it began publishing the magazine Matica. On 18 March 2008, the Parliament of Montenegro passed the Act of Matica crnogorska, which signifies it as an independent organization in the cultural field.
