The Substation is
Singapore 's first and only independentcontemporary art s centre. It was founded in1990 byKuo Pao Kun .The Substation is centrally located in the city's civic district. Venues at The Substation for hire include a black box theatre, a gallery, a dance studio, the Random Room and two multi-function classrooms. The Substation presents a wide range of artists and programmes, from traditionally trained dancers to local
rock band s; established visual artists to young poets; publications to internationalshort film festival s;experimental theatre to seminal conferences on Singapore arts and culture. The Substation holds an arts festival called SeptFest annually. The current Artistic Co-Directors are Lee Weng Choy and Audrey Wong. The Substation's long time caretaker, Mrs Chua, is renowned in Singapore's art circle.Over the years, The Substation has worked with some of Singapore's most critically acclaimed artists, writers and intellectuals. The Substation has an in-house artist incubation programme called The Associate Artist Programme. Artists under this programme include Tan Pin Pin, Royston Tan, Zai Kuning and George Chua.
