He was born at
Grenoble inDauphiné , of a Protestant family. He was nephew of revolutionareAntoine Barnave and General Marchand. He enlisted in theFrench Army at sixteen, he joined his uncle in Warsaw and his promoted to sergeant 11 April, 1812. Takes part in the Russian Campaign, the taking ofMoscow and the retreat back. He then fought in Napoleon's campaigns in Germany and France.Middle life
Made
Marshal of France in 1856 at the same time as Canrobert and Bosquet.Later life
He received no command during the
Franco-Prussian War , because of his high age and died16 January ,1871 inGeneva .
