Holt County is a county located in the U.S. state of Nebraska. As of 2000, the population is 11,551. Its county seat is O'Neill.GR|6

In the Nebraska license plate system, Holt County is represented by the prefix 36 (it had the thirty-sixth-largest number of vehicles registered in the county when the license plate system was established in 1922).

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,418 square miles (6,262 km²), of which, 2,413 square miles (6,249 km²) of it is land and 5 square miles (13 km²) of it (0.21%) is water.GR|1

The county was created by an act of the Nebraska Legislature in 1862. It is named for Joseph Holt of Kentucky, who was Postmaster General and Secretary of War under President James Buchanan. It shares its name with Holt County, Missouri, though it is named for a different Holt.
