Iris flower data set

Iris flower data set

The Iris flower data set or Fisher's Iris data set is a multivariate data set introduced by Sir Ronald Aylmer Fisher (1936) as an example of discriminant analysis.cite journal|author=Fisher, R.A. |title=The Use of Multiple Measurements in Taxonomic Problems| journal=Annals of Eugenics| volume=7 |pages=179–188| date=1936| url=http://digital.library.adelaide.edu.au/coll/special//fisher/138.pdf] It is sometimes called Anderson's Iris data set because Edgar Anderson collected the data to quantify the geographic variation of "Iris" flowers in the Gaspé Peninsula.cite journal| author=Edgar Anderson |year=1935 |title=The irises of the Gaspé Peninsula |journal=Bulletin of the American Iris Society |volume=59 |pages=2–5]

The dataset consists of 50 samples from each of three species of "Iris" flowers ("Iris setosa", "Iris virginica" and "Iris versicolor"). Four features were measured from each sample, they are the length and the width of sepal and petal. Based on the combination of the four features, Fisher developed a linear discriminant model to determine which species they are.
