Character
Tokiomi Tōsaka is the father of
Rin Tōsaka andSakura Matō , two of the heroines fromFate/stay night . As a member of the Tōsaka family, he entered the Fourth Holy Grail War as the Master of Archer.Kiritsugu Emiya identifies Tokiomi as one of the two most threatening magi involved in the war after assessing all the Masters involved.Tokiomi is an arrogant and manipulative man who strives, as all powerful mages do, to reach
Akasha , or the root of all knowledge. He andRisei Kotomine are close acquaintances; through Risei, Tokiomi meets a youngKirei Kotomine , Risei's son, whose command spells have appeared three years prior to the start of the Fourth Holy Grail War. The two men arrange for Kirei to be transferred from the Church into the Mages Association as Tokiomi's pupil while leaving Kirei uninformed as to the true nature of the marks on his hand. Both Tokiomi and Risei intend to use Kirei to insure Tokiomi will obtain the Grail and that Kirei's role is to provide Tokiomi with additional command spells and another Servant. Like Risei, Tokiomi holds Kirei in high regard in terms of ability and character but has little understanding of how empty the young man feels. He is married to Aoi Zenjō, the childhood friend of
Kariya Matō . As a father, Tokiomi seems to care little for his daughters; he leaves his estate in the hands of Rin, who he intends to be his successor, and allowsZōken Matō to adopt Sakura because Tokiomi does not wish to train a second child as a mage, given that there is a traditional belief that training a second child would introduce competition. He justifies Sakura's adoption to Kariya and Rin on separate occasions. To Kariya, he declares that while his daughters, as eventual successors to two ancient families of magicians, may someday come into conflict, as a father and mage, he cannot imagine a greater fate than to have one daughter become a legendary victor while her sister becomes renowned as a formidable and worthy opponent. However, during a visit to Rin during the war, Tokiomi reveals that because both she and Sakura were naturally talented at sorcery and he would only be able to train one child, he believed that sending Sakura to the Matō family to learn their methods of sorcery would allow Sakura to protect herself in the future from those who would try and exploit her natural abilities.Tokiomi dies by Kirei Kotomine's hands in the final volume of Fate/zero. Considering him to be a loyal apprentice, Tokiomi gave Kirei an Azoth knife as a parting gift, only for him to be slain by it. This is the same knife that is passed onto his daughter, Rin, and is wielded by Shiro to ironically kill Kirei in the Fate Scenario.

Summoned with the fossilized skin of the first snake that shed its skin, Tokiomi's servant is the Archer class servant, Gilgamesh, the King of Heroes and the same rogue Servant who appeared in "Fate/stay night". He is well known for his Noble Phantasm, "Gate of Babylon: King's Treasury".
Much to Tokiomi's displeasure, the arrogant and materialistic Gilgamesh has difficulty acting covertly. In turn, Gilgamesh dislikes his Master, who he considers boring, and is intrigued by
Kirei Kotomine 's participation in the war. The Servant suggests that to overcome his emptiness, Kirei should determine backgrounds and the motivations of the other Masters and Servants as to why they wish to obtain the Holy Grail. He dislikes the presence of Saber and Iskander because they were kings like he was before they became epic spirits.
