Gholam Serwar Nasher

Gholam Serwar Nasher

Ghulam Sarwar Nasher (1919 – 1984), an ethnic Pashtun, was the President of Spinzar Cotton Company in Kunduz, Afghanistan. He founded the Nasher Library and Museum in Kunduz, and helped Kunduz become one of the richest provinces of the country. He was an avid hunter, art collector and philanthropist. Ghulam Nasher was jailed after Prince Mohammed Daoud Khan's coup in 1973 because of a personal feud and Nasher's anti-communist beliefs. In 1979, Nasher went to Germany and died there in 1984. He was the uncle of the famous Afghan singer, Farhad Darya.

In the late 1960s, Sarwar Nasher helped a young man, Hekmatyar; he sent him to a military school and then to Kabul University's engineering department in 1968. On his return to Kunduz he was jailed by Nasher for several days. Hekmatyar's father requested Lord Sarwar Nasher to do so in order to discipline the boy for toying with the communist ideology.
