1993 Italian Grand Prix

1993 Italian Grand Prix

The 1993 Italian Grand Prix was a Formula One motor race held at Monza on September 12, 1993. It was the thirteenth round of the 1993 Formula One season. A first lap collision between Damon Hill and Ayrton Senna caused both to drop down the order, but Hill recovered to take the lead when Alain Prost's engine failed with four laps to go. This allowed Hill to retain a mathematical chance of the championship, and made him the first driver ever to score his first three victories in succession. Meanwhile, Senna crashed into Martin Brundle's Ligier-Renault on lap 8, eliminating both. During the BBC interview with Brundle, his team-mate Mark Blundell crashed heavily.

Christian Fittipaldi collided with his Minardi team-mate Pierluigi Martini as they approached the finish line. Fittipaldi's left front wheel made contact with Martini's right rear wheel, which launched Fittipaldi into a near perfect back flip, landing on all four wheels and continuing over the line to finish the race. Neither of them lost a position due to the incident.

Michael Andretti knew that the race would be his final Formula One start - he was to be replaced in the McLaren team at the next race by Finland's Mika Häkkinen. Ironically, it was also his best result of the season.
